Dear Conservative South Carolinians and Legislators

Published May 26, 2026

The founders built a government meant to be kept on a short leash. Government exists to protect freedom. That's where limited government, individual liberty, and personal responsibility come from, and those ideas survive only because somebody guards them.

The Constitution is the proof. It's a law written to constrain the government rather than the people, which is why it opens with "We the People." The document starts by naming who's in charge.

Jefferson saw where it could go wrong. Writing to Thomas Cooper on November 29, 1802, he put it plainly: "if we can but prevent the government from wasting the labours of the people, under the pretence of taking care of them, they must become happy." That "pretence of taking care of them" is the warning we keep ignoring.

What Conservatism Means

Conservatism keeps the reins tight on government power. Government should stay out of where it doesn't belong. It's a guardian standing watch, keeping the government out of our personal and business lives as much as possible, trusting that people left to figure things out can make decisions that lead to growth and prosperity, for themselves and for the whole community. Conservatism is a shield that keeps government from meddling in every decision a person makes.

The Disheartening Part

So it's disheartening to watch the folks who should be championing those values push for more and more laws. Since when did conservatives advocate for more government infringement? Every new law brings a new restriction, another piece of our freedom chipped away. And every new law hands the Left another tool, one they're happy to pick up the moment it's useful for advancing their agenda.

The Fix

The solution is common sense. We get back to the rule of law by enforcing what is already on the books and repealing what doesn't work. We cut the red tape so that life gets simpler for everyone, from the small business owner to the parent deciding when and how to educate their child, from the young entrepreneur launching her first venture to the family trying to make ends meet. We enable communities to come together, solve their own problems and innovate, without waiting for some distant bureaucrat to give the nod.

What's Troubling in South Carolina

Yet, here in South Carolina, a so-called Red State with a Republican majority, something doesn't add up. Despite being led by people who campaign on conservative values, each session of our General Assembly brings a fresh flood of legislation that does little but bloat the government further. It's a betrayal of the principles we claim to stand for. Bills that start with the best intentions are changed into something unrecognizable, and we end up with more rules and less freedom. The process is quiet enough that by the time we notice it is already law.

The intention behind a bill becomes irrelevant the moment it becomes law. If that text spells out more control and less freedom, it's a step in the wrong direction, no matter how noble the original pitch.

To Our Conservative SC Legislators

Remember what this country stands for: a strong belief in freedom, responsibility, and the pursuit of happiness. Each time you consider a new law, ask the honest question. Is this in service of these values, or is it one more constraint added to the pile?

We don't need more laws. We need better stewardship of the freedoms our forebears gave us. We need leaders who see their job as protecting our ability to live our lives as we see fit. We need leaders who will stand against compromise legislation and vote no when a bill contains even one sentence of state overreach. It's time to protect our ability to live, be free, and chase happiness on our own terms.

More laws mean more government, and more government means less freedom. That's the road away from everything the founders laid out, the one that leads South Carolina, and the nation, somewhere nobody wants to end up. Let's choose the other road, the one paved with respect for individual liberty and a belief in the power of ordinary people to govern their own lives.

Together, we can honor the legacy of those who came before us and keep the flame of freedom they lit burning brightly for the generations still to come.
