In order to fix any problem, we must first understand it. Systematic liberalism is now deeply embedded in the fabric of our South Carolina schools. To address this issue, we must educate ourselves about educational bureaucracy terminology, plans, and the laws passed to implement those plans. Teaching is not just about reading, writing, and arithmetic anymore. The last 50 years have seen an expansion of what and how teachers teach. Many of these new areas, such as "Physical Disability," "Mental Disability," and a few emotional disorders like "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" (PTSD), are legitimate areas to address. Crucially, for our discussion, all of these areas were specified in law and were not "universal" areas of instruction, i.e., taught to all children.
However, something new is on the horizon. Recent educational bureaucracy expansion in South Carolina has followed national trends by implementing Obama’s "Every Student Succeeds Act" (ESSA) (2015), which applies a "Multi-Tiered System of Supports" (MTSS). MTSS uses a pyramid model, wherein Tier I is instruction provided universally to all students. All students in Tier I receive not only academic instruction but can also receive instruction in the undefined areas of "Social-emotional" and "Behavioral". Moreover, the law leaves it up to the educational bureaucracy to decide what "Social-emotional" and "Behavioral" specifically entail.
Now, non-legitimate ideas and social philosophies are being taught to our children. These include "Equity" and all its derivatives, which are essentially Marxism disguised as morality. But unlike the legitimate physical, mental, and emotional disabilities discussed above, the law did not authorize, enumerate, or specify the teaching of these social philosophies universally to all our South Carolina children.
We now find ourselves in a confusing world where the teaching of non-legitimate, liberal social philosophies like "Equity" and "Critical Race Theory" to our South Carolina children appears to be legal. Implicit, yet hard evidence that the teaching of liberal social philosophies to our South Carolina children is now legal, is the fact that several of our informed and valiant South Carolina Republican legislators are scurrying to pass a law making the teaching of Critical Race Theory illegal. You don’t pass a law to make something illegal unless it’s already legal.
So how and when did teaching our South Carolina children liberal social philosophies like "Equity" and "Critical Race Theory" become legal? Amazingly, no one seems to know the answers to these questions, or if they do, they’re not talking about it. It's time we start the conversation.
